Is God always in control? Can we trust him?
I don’t know about you, but there are lots of moments in my life when I need God to act fast, and when he doesn’t, I am tempted to take things into my own hands. At times, a power struggle ensues, as I am not ready for him to be in control of my life!
Imagine this. You are in your car, with the steering wheel right in front of you, all set to drive off. You’re perfectly capable of driving to your destination, but someone else is telling you that he can drive your car better than you can, to a better destination. Wouldn’t you be tempted to hang on to the steering wheel, knowing that you have the ability and knowledge necessary to get where you are going? I know I would!
As always, God uses my personal experiences to teach me a lesson or two. This week, I have been learning to let go of the steering wheel because he is in control. And here’s why!
God has the power to be ‘in control’
Have you ever considered that for God to speak the universe into being, he must be quite powerful? Let’s check out a few verses that refer to God’s power.
Jeremiah 10:12 “But the Lord made the earth by his power, and he preserves it by his wisdom. With his own understanding he stretched out the heavens.” (NLT)
Jeremiah 32:17 “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” (NLT)
I like that section that says, “with his understanding, he stretched out the heavens.” For God to have stretched out heavens that have baffled humanity for years, he must be quite powerful, right?
The next verse then adds, “your strong hand and powerful arm,” and then “nothing is too hard for you.” Truly, a God who created the world as we know it is powerful enough to handle the issues in our lives. He has the power and understanding to take that steering wheel and direct your life in the correct direction as you sit back and relax.
God makes the impossible possible
Luke 1:37 “ For with God nothing will be impossible.” (NKJV)
Not only is there nothing too hard for him to handle, there is also nothing impossible for/with him! Remember, this is the God who caused Mary to conceive Jesus – a complete miracle! Let’s check out another ‘impossibility’ in the Bible.
Genesis 18: 13-14 “Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (NLT)
Genesis 21:1-3 “The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened at just the time God had said it would. And Abraham named their son Isaac.” (NLT)
At the time Sarah conceived Isaac, there was no earthly way she was ever going to have a child because she was just about ninety years old! But God, who had promised to make Abraham a great nation, caused Sarah to conceive and give birth to Isaac, not only as a fulfillment of his promise but also to display his sovereign power.
We all go through situations that may seem impossible to handle at the time until God steps in and makes them possible. God, however, can only do what he does best if we let him take the steering wheel – if we let him be in control of our lives.
Before we were born, God was in control.
Who created you? God! Did he have a plan set out for you before you made your grand entrance into the world? Most definitely!
Let me pick out a few verses from Psalm 139 that will help illustrate this point.
Psalm 139:1 “O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me.” (NLT)
Only your creator knows everything about you, just as an inventor knows every bit of his invention.
Psalm 139:16 “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (NLT)
An inventor cannot say these words about his invention, because he cannot predict the future. But God can!
Psalm 139:4 “You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord.” (NLT)
This is just mind-boggling, isn’t it? How does God know what we are going to say before we even say it? Clearly, God knows us better than we know ourselves, and as such, he is the best person to control our lives.
What do we conclude from all this? Simple – that giving God full control of our lives is the best move! God’s infinite knowledge of your life, his unmatched power and his ability to make the impossible work out are just what you need when difficult seasons come calling. Let him be in control of your life!
