Lord, I want to know You.

Getting to know the Lord sometimes requires seeing Him as He truly is!

I have often said the words, “I want to know you, Lord,” with much zeal and fervor. This week as I went through the book of Job, however, I came across the chapters where the Lord answers Job. As I read through the first one, Chapter 38, I realized I do not know the Lord at all.

Job 38: 4-5 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?” (NIV)

You laid the earth’s foundations and marked off their boundaries,

Something that I can barely comprehend.

Does this mean that you can do away with the earth as easily as you created it?

Yes, Lord, I want to know you,

But the extent of Your power scares me.

Job 38:12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place…” (NIV)

The sun cannot rise unless You tell it to.

The rays of dawn cannot light up the world unless You allow them to do so.

Lord, does this mean that You could choose to keep us in darkness?

That our awakening and lying down is completely dependent on you?

Yes, Lord, I do want to know You,

Even though Your greatness scares me.

Job 38:17 “Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?” (NIV)

The power of life and death is in Your hands, Lord.

You choose who lives, and who dies.

The number of our days is entirely in Your power.

You alone have seen the gates of death.

Yes, Lord, I want to know You,

Yet the thought that my life is completely in Your hands sometimes scares me.

Job 38:25-26 “Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm, to water a land where no one lives, an uninhabited desert…” (NIV)

Snow, rain, hail, and thunderstorms,

Things that we assume happen naturally,

Are controlled by You, and You alone.

You water dry land with rain, and You make paths for the thunderstorm.

Lord, Your power is beyond imagination!

How can I claim to want to know such a powerful God?

A God who created the elements, and controls them with a word.

Lord, I want to know You,

Even when the vastness of Your power leaves me speechless.

Job 38: 28-30 “Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew? From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?” (NIV)

Rain, ice, frost, dew…

I had never thought about where these come from.

Yet God declares that He is the origin of all these things.

He has the power to dispense them in whatever amount or intensity He chooses.

Such power too great for the human mind to comprehend.

Yet, in spite of my fear of this great power,

Lord, I still want to know You.

Job 38:39-41 “Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions when they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket? Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?” (NIV)

It amazes me, Lord, how you created the entire heaven and earth,

And yet You still lovingly provide sustenance for your creation.

Does that mean that You love me too?

Does that mean that even though You are so powerful,

I have a place in Your heart?

Yes, Lord, I want to know you.

I want to experience Your mercy, grace, and love.

I want to be at a place where I am in awe of Your power, and not afraid.

A place where I acknowledge Your lordship over my life.

Lord, I want to know You,

And I am ready to give myself completely to You.
