You’re never alone, when God is near

Alone – how can I say that I feel alone?

Yet there are people all around me.

They smile at me, I smile back.

They engage me in conversation, and I happily join in.

When it’s all over, and they leave,

I find myself back in my shell.

Alone.

No smiles, no conversation.

Just me.

So why, then, do people say…

You’re never alone, when God is near?

Hebrews 13:5 “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you,” (NLT)

Inside my shell, I enjoy the warmth of my tears,

The comfort of my sorrows,

And the companionship of my troubles.

An enjoyment that does not last,

Because it is coupled with pain.

Pain so deep that it is almost physical.

A tiny voice reminds me of the Word,

The Word that has reminders that the Lord is near,

Yet,

I still feel very alone,

Yet to experience what the little voice keeps telling me,

“You’re never alone, when God is near.”

Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (NLT)

Nobody understands what I am going through,

Because the pain has pushed them all away.

I can’t explain what’s going on – there are no words.

I can’t wear my emotions on my sleeve,

I want to appear strong.

But when I’m all alone, everything crumbles.

And I dive back into my shell.

How I wish there was someone who could keep me company,

Someone who will climb into the shell with me and just be there.

But nobody can.

In the depths of the shell, I hear a tiny voice,

A voice so persistent in delivering its message.

A voice that makes sure I hear what it has to say.

“You’re never alone, when God is near.”

I want to get out of this shell,

But it is oh, so comfortable and predictable!

The pain and sorrow make me feel right at home.

Sadly, I can’t have both.

I can’t have the comfort of my troubles,

And companionship with the Lord.

Because I can’t take the pain any more, however,

I need to make a choice.

I think it’s best if I run into His arms,

And enjoy the warmth of His embrace.

Then I will safely be able to testify that,

I’m never alone, when God is near.

Deuteronomy 31:8b “He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (NLT)
