Day 6: Hebrews 10:23
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”
As I thought about this verse, I remembered something that happened a few years ago. A dear friend passed away after bravely battling an illness, and it was devastating to all who knew her. She loved God and had always served Him with all her heart. When my daughter was joining high school, she literally held my hand throughout the whole process. Now she was gone. It did not make sense.
I had many questions for God. One of them was, “If you loved her so much, why did you have to take her away instead of healing her?” Honestly, my hope was shattered for a while.
A month or two later, I heard a gentle voice in my spirit asking me, “Do you trust in me for who I am, or for what I can do?” That question knocked me sideways. My trust and hope had been pegged on what God was supposed to do, not on who He is. In spite of all that had happened, He remained faithful. None of His promises had failed. Yes, things had not turned out the way we wanted, but God had not changed.
It was at that moment I realized that to get through this life, I would need to place my hope in God—not because He is a provider, healer, or anything else, but because of who He is: Sovereign, Loving, Powerful, Unchanging, Faithful, and so much more.
Reflection
Have you put your hope in God because of who He is, or because of what He can do for you? Are you ready to trust Him even if He does not come through for you in the way you expect Him to? If you’re struggling with this, don’t worry—I am, too. Just remember that God’s faithfulness is not tied to His actions, but His character.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for being patient with me, even when I struggle to put my hope in You. Teach me to trust in You because of who You are, not simply because of what You can do for me. Amen.
