Day 18: Hebrews 6:19
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.” (NIV)
When I think of an anchor, the image that comes to mind is a ship’s anchor, holding firmly to the seabed so the vessel does not drift away. An anchor must be strong enough to withstand any force that might cause the ship to move.
Imagine hope as this kind of anchor—holding firmly to what and whom I believe in, regardless of the circumstances.
A few years ago, our car broke down in the middle of nowhere. We were on a tarmac road, yes, but it was not a busy one, especially in the evenings. There we were—two adults and two scared children—hoping someone would stop. Nobody stopped, because that place was known to be unsafe. Finally, a lorry stopped and offered to tow us to the next township.
We were grateful, yet at the back of my mind questions lingered. The road had some steep sections ahead. How would the rope hold up under the weight of our car? There was no other option, though. We had to trust that the rope would not snap.
After about twenty minutes, the lorry drove into a small township. It stopped, unhitched our car, and drove off. The rope had held! The fears I had were completely unfounded!
Just as the rope acted as an anchor for our car, so hope acts as an anchor for our souls. In the midst of difficulty, hope in the Lord points us to the truth—that God is with us and continues to have good plans for us despite all that is happening.
Reflection
Where have you anchored your soul? Wealth? Possessions? People? If all these were taken away, where would your hope rest? Hope placed in God anchors us in the truth of His love for us and the unchanging nature of His character. Choose to place your hope in the Lord today!
Prayer
Lord, help me to place my hope in You alone. My deepest desire is that this hope will always be an anchor for my soul, in both good and difficult times. Amen.
